Nation Media group unveils AI Framework

Two days earlier, on March 6, NMG unveiled its AI framework, a comprehensive policy guiding how artificial intelligence will be used across its print, digital, and broadcast platforms.

The framework prioritizes editorial control, transparency, and data protection. It allows AI to support translation, content ranking, audience management, and administrative automation, while keeping human judgment at the center of newsroom decision-making.

Dr. Joe Ageyo, NMG’s Editor-in-Chief, emphasized that the framework is designed to complement, not override the editorial authority that underpins the group’s reporting standards.

Basic Ethical values and Management

MCK welcomed the move, noting that NMG’s framework aligns closely with its own ethical guidance. The Council reiterated that AI should enhance, not replace human intelligence.

It endorsed NMG’s “human-in-the-loop” approach, which emphasizes fairness, privacy, and accountability, and praised the use of clear labels on AI-generated content to uphold journalistic standards.

“The insistence on editorial oversight, transparency through the labelling of AI-generated content, and adherence to NMG’s editorial policy sends a powerful signal that quality journalism remains paramount,” the Council stated.

Training and Public Interest

MCK also stressed that successful implementation requires daily commitment. It urged NMG to invest in ongoing staff training, warning that AI literacy and ethical reasoning cannot be instilled through one-off workshops.

“AI literacy and ethical reasoning require sustained investment, not one-off workshops,” the statement added.

The Council cautioned against allowing commercial metrics to override public interest and warned of the risks of algorithmic curation forming filter bubbles.

MCK called the framework a “living document,” urging regular reviews to keep pace with AI’s evolving risks. It invited other media houses to follow NMG’s example and offered its support to help the industry navigate this technological shift.
