• Kenya joined the Commonwealth in 1963 and quickly emerged as one of its most active African members. Nairobi has hosted major summits, led peace missions, and championed global action groups:

On March 8, 2026, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi joined foreign ministers at Lancaster House, London, for the 26th Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting.

Chaired by Samoa’s Finance Minister Mulipola Anarosa Ale Molioʻo, the summit focused on repositioning the Commonwealth amid global economic shifts and rising geopolitical fragmentation.

Mudavadi framed Kenya’s participation as strategic preparation for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda, set for November 2026.

“These discussions will shape policy priorities in a complex global environment,” he said, echoing reflections by Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey.

Before the formal agenda, ministers convened for a strategic retreat themed “The Commonwealth at a Moment of Strategic Opportunity.” Botchwey warned that multilateralism is under pressure and urged member states to resist isolationism. “The ties of the Commonwealth matter more than ever,” she said.

Ministers later advanced the 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, debated reform proposals, and called for tighter collaboration on trade, investment, and democratic governance. These priorities align with Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which emphasizes inclusive growth and resilience.
