The government, on March 2, 2026, embarked on a landmark project to expand the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital into a Level 6 National Teaching and Referral Hospital, with construction of a modern twin‑tower complex valued at 1 billion shillings now underway.
In a statement on his X account, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki noted the government has already started the process of aligning the facility’s systems, processes, and human resource capacity so that it can be assessed and upgraded from the current Level 5 to Level 6.
“Construction of new facilities is ongoing at the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital, to establish a new twin‑tower hospital complex with modern facilities at a cost of 1 billion shillings,” he said.
According to Kindiki, the upgraded facility will shorten journeys and cut costs for residents of Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Isiolo, Marsabit, and Laikipia Counties who currently have to travel to Nairobi‑based Level 6 facilities for specialized treatment of critical and chronic illnesses.
The expansion will also introduce specialized services such as advanced surgical procedures, cancer treatment, and kidney care. This upgrade is expected to decentralize healthcare, reduce the burden on Nairobi hospitals, and ensure equitable access for thousands of patients across Upper Eastern Kenya.
During an inspection of the ongoing works, Kindiki urged contractors to deliver expedited but quality construction.
The hospital’s elevation to Level 6 will not only enhance healthcare delivery but also strengthen medical training and research capacity, positioning Meru as a new national hub for specialized medicine.
For residents, this marks a historic milestone in healthcare access and regional development.
