Reliable vaccines and essential medicines are now reaching more households across Nakuru County following the expansion of solar-powered Cold Chain Equipment (CCE) installations in public health facilities.

The county government says the investment is transforming service delivery, particularly in areas affected by inconsistent electricity supply.

By adopting solar-powered refrigeration systems, health facilities are now able to safely store lifesaving vaccines and temperature-sensitive medicines without interruption, directly improving immunisation coverage and overall health outcomes.

According to a post by the county government's on Facebook on February 13 2026, solar-powered fridges have proven to be “game-changers' in strengthening frontline health services.

Officials note that the systems significantly reduce electricity costs, require minimal maintenance, and provide reliable storage solutions in remote and underserved areas.

For the 2026/27 financial year, solar CCE installations have been completed at Munanda in Gilgil Sub-County, Gacharage in Kuresoi North, and at Roret and Lomolo in Rongai Sub-County.

"Installations are ongoing at facilities including Rongai Turi, Kamosop, Kigonor, Lusiru, Arus and Kapyemit," says the County Government.

The expansion builds on progress made during the 2024/25 financial year, when facilities such as Chepkundi, Tendwet, Kiplemeiywo, Masaita, Kapsinendet, Ndoroto, Kinungi, Ngondi, Korabariet, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Mwangi Michuki Dispensaries were equipped with solar cold chain systems.

The move is expected to bolster routine vaccination campaigns and support emergency response capacity across the county.

The initiative forms part of Governor Susan Kihika’s administration’s broader strategy to strengthen primary care infrastructure and expand access to quality healthcare for all residents.

By leveraging renewable energy solutions, the county is not only improving service delivery but also promoting sustainable and cost-effective healthcare systems.

With more facilities coming online, Nakuru County is positioning itself to ensure that no child misses vaccination due to storage challenges and that essential medicines remain accessible even in hard-to-reach areas.
