Mawego Police Station, the station where 31-year-old blogger Albert Ojwang was held before his death under unclear circumstances on June 7, 2025, is currently on fire.

On July 3, Mawego police station was set on fire by a mammoth crowd that was hoisting Ojwang's body in a coffin. The body had just arrived in Kakoth village, Homabay, from Nairobi for burial the following day.

The crowd sang dirges as they marched towards the police station where Albert is said to have been detained temporarily on June 7 before he was transported to the Central Police Station in Nairobi.

On Wednesday, July 2, 2025, Ojwang's family held a requiem service at the Ridgeways Baptist Church in Nairobi to eulogise this young man whose death remains a mystery to date.

The same day the requiem mass was going on, the high court gave a ruling clearing the way for Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police Eliud Lagat, the main suspect in Ojwang's murder, to resume office as investigations continue.

How can any genuine investigation take place in such an unideal environment while the main suspect is still in office?

This is the question many Kenyans are fumbling with. For any genuine investigation to be carried out, the main suspect must step down from their office to pave the way for investigations, so that a neutral environment required for investigation can prevail.

Initially, the case aimed at keeping DIG Lagat off duty while the allegations that he arrested, tortured and killed Mr. Ojwang were taking shape.

As the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) continue with the investigations, Kenyans are watching closely as events unfold.

However, already Kenyans have seen and felt the lack of transparency, which will culminate in unfairness and injustice for the late Ojwang, by the fact that DIG Lagat has resumed office.

Nevertheless, the watchdog has vowed to conclude the probe before the next mention date by the court.

Meanwhile, if all goes as planned, the late Albert Ojwang will be laid to rest on Friday, July 4, 2025, in his home village, Kakoth, Homa Bay County.
