Sitting at the borders of major South Rift routes and surrounded by countless smallholder tea estates, Bureti Constituency has gradually shifted its political landscape from a strong KANU area to a stronghold of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Factors such as high population density, the establishment of schools, and fierce lobbying for an agricultural policy maintain the constituency’s relevance in Kericho’s politics and make it a key district to watch in the subsequent elections.

In terms of number of citizens per km², Bureti is the top sub-county in Kericho County. The constituency has been in its current form since the 1963 independence elections and covers an area of around 321 square kilometres. Besides the rich Kipsigis cultural heritage, the constituency has a cash-crop-oriented economy largely commercialised. It also has 95,320 registered and eligible voters according to 2022 IEBC Records.

As Kericho’s most densely populated administrative unit, Bureti places continuous pressure on schools, water sources, and markets. Serving as both an educational centre and a production region for agricultural commodities, the area is a leading contributor to the South Rift.

2022 General Election 

Winner: Kibet Komingoi (UDA) received 45,398 votes .

Second place: Leonard Sang (Independent) was runner-up with 15,620 votes.

2017 General Election

Winner: Japhet Kiptergech Mutai (Jubilee Party) was elected with 46,055 votes (68.38% of the ballot paper).

Second place: Leonard Sang (Independent) obtained 15,672 votes (23.27% of the vote).

2013 General Election

Leonard Sang  (URP) won this election by 31,241 votes.

Franklin Bett (ODM) was the second best candidate and won 14,562 votes.

Economic Role and Relevance

Kapkatet is the host of the University of Kabianga’s campus there, Kapkatet District Hospital, and a stadium, which, over time, has become a main political meeting ground for the Kipsigis.

Litein has been a business heart, serving as a hub for local markets and Jua Kali activities. The smallholder factories of KTDA, including Litein and Chelal, are processing the tea leaves for the growers.
