• For Kenyan athletes, it is not just another race, it is a chance to pocket millions, secure future opportunities, and stamp their authority in one of Africa’s fastest-growing marathons.

As the registration window for this year’s Nairobi city Marathon closes, anticipation is quickly building within Kenya’s bustling athletics community. The stage is set for one of the most anticipated sporting events in the country as the Nairobi City Marathon returns this Sunday, July 6, 2025.

For Kenyan athletes, it is not just another race, it is a chance to pocket millions, secure future opportunities, and stamp their authority in one of Africa’s fastest-growing marathons.

Introduced in 2022, the event was designed to offer local athletes a world-class race within the country and to elevate Nairobi’s status as a sporting destination. In just two years, it has grown into one of the richest road races on the continent, attracting both household names and rising stars.

Last year’s winners, Eliud Magut and Cynthia Jerotich, will be back on the starting line hoping to defend their titles. Magut, who surprised many with his win, faces a stiff challenge from the likes of Titus Kipruto, Josphat Bett, Geoffrey Toroitich, and Robert Kipkemboi are all determined to claim top honours.

The women’s race promises an equally fierce battle, with Sheila Chepkirui, Winfridah Moraa Moseti, and Betty Chepkemoi set to push Jerotich to her limits. With personal bests in major international marathons, this year’s women’s line-up is arguably the strongest yet.

At stake is a KES 3.5 million prize for the winners, with cash awards spread across the top 20 finishers. Organisers say the move is meant to benefit a wider pool of athletes and give upcoming runners a fair shot at financial reward.

“This marathon has opened doors for many local runners who rarely get a chance to race abroad,” said Athletics Kenya’s Barnaba Korir.

With over 17,000 participants expected, the streets of Nairobi will come alive as athletes chase glory, personal bests, and the promise of a better tomorrow. For the runners, it’s more than a race , it is a chance to rewrite their stories.
