- This year’s global theme, “Celebrating Men and Boys,” reinforces the need for more inclusive spaces where men and boys can express themselves freely and receive the support they need.
International Men’s Day, observed worldwide on November 19, is dedicated to recognising the wellbeing, identity, and contributions of men and boys. It highlights men’s mental and physical health, challenges limiting stereotypes, and celebrates positive male role models who inspire their families and communities.
The concept of International Men’s Day was first introduced by Thomas Oaster in 1992, but the modern observance was revived in 1999 by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh in Trinidad and Tobago. He chose November 19 to honor his father's birthday and a local initiative promoting men's issues. Since then, the day has gained traction globally, celebrated in over 80 countries, though it remains unofficial in terms of UN recognition
The celebration is guided by six core principles that emphasise the importance of uplifting positive male role models, recognising the positive impact men make in society, prioritising men’s health and wellbeing, addressing the discrimination men often face, promoting gender equality, and working towards a safer and better world for everyone.
These principles seek to highlight issues that are often overlooked such as stress, emotional struggle, and the rising number of male suicide cases—while encouraging open conversations that support healthier relationships and communities.
This year’s global theme, “Celebrating Men and Boys,” reinforces the need for more inclusive spaces where men and boys can express themselves freely and receive the support they need.
Across different countries and institutions, the day is marked through awareness programmes, dialogue forums, online campaigns, and communal events that focus on mental health, healthy masculinity, mentorship, and shared experiences.
Ultimately, International Men’s Day serves as a reminder that when men and boys are understood, supported, and empowered, families and societies grow stronger and more compassionate.
