• Deputy President Kindiki emphasized the government's commitment to different categories of victims. Landowners who lost their homes in the floods were prioritized with immediate title deeds and replacement plots.
On February 17, 2026, Deputy President (DP) Kithure Kindiki visited Maai Mahiu to issue title deeds to families displaced by the floods of April 2024. The gesture marked a milestone in the government’s promise to restore land security and dignity to survivors.

DP Kindiki arrived with a high ranking delegation that included Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, Lands Cabinet Secretary (CS) Alice Wahome, and Lands Principal Secretary (PS) Nixon Korir. Maai Mahiu Member of County Assembly (MCA) Eliud Kamau and several local leaders joined them, presenting a united front in the resettlement effort.

PS Korir announced the issuance of 105 title deeds, ensuring that families will officially own the land where they will rebuild their lives.
DP Kindiki underscored the government’s commitment to different categories of victims. Landowners who lost homes received immediate title deeds and replacement plots. For tenants, he outlined a roadmap:

“The Ministry will look into their cases and provide land at a later date,” Kindiki said.

To jumpstart rebuilding, both the 105 landowners and 60 tenant families will receive Ksh 20,000 to assist with construction and resettlement needs.

A Community Heals

Mr. Ngugi, chairman of the affected families, expressed profound relief. He thanked the government and volunteers who stood by survivors during the darkest days.

“We are grateful; your contributions have made us feel seen and supported during this difficult time,” he said.

Remembering the 2024 Tragedy

The resettlement effort follows the disaster of April 29, 2024, when heavy rains caused a culvert beneath a railway embankment to fail. The torrent killed at least 48 people and left 84 missing. Initially described as a “dam burst,” officials later clarified the cause: a massive accumulation of stones, trees, and mud blocked a river tunnel, unleashing devastation on Maai Mahiu.
