- Once complete, the facility is expected to provide a more conducive trading environment that enhances comfort, operational efficiency and business continuity throughout the year.
On February 16, 2026, The County Government of Nakuru officially handed over the construction site for a new market shade at Wakulima Market in Biashara Ward, marking another milestone in its ongoing efforts to modernise and improve trading spaces across the county.
The handover ceremony was presided over by County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade, Stephen Kuria Muiruri, alongside Biashara Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Fadhili Musuri.
The event signals the county administration’s continued investment in structured, safe and dignified environments for traders operating within local markets.
The project involves the construction of a modern and well-designed market shade aimed at shielding traders and their goods from adverse weather conditions.
Once complete, the facility is expected to provide a more conducive trading environment that enhances comfort, operational efficiency and business continuity throughout the year.
According to the County Government, the development forms part of a broader strategy to upgrade and standardise market infrastructure across Nakuru.
By improving physical trading spaces, the administration seeks to reinforce order, safety and sustainability within local markets while elevating the dignity of small-scale traders who form the backbone of the county’s informal economy.
The intervention also aligns with the county’s economic empowerment agenda, which prioritises support for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Through targeted infrastructure investments, the government aims to stimulate grassroots enterprise, expand local commerce and strengthen economic resilience at the ward level.
Biashara Ward, widely regarded as a commercial hub within Nakuru, hosts numerous traders whose livelihoods depend on daily market operations.

The new shade is expected to not only improve working conditions but also attract more customers by creating an organised and welcoming marketplace.
The county government stated, "Through targeted infrastructure investments, the government continues to stimulate grassroots enterprise, expand local commerce, and strengthen the overall economic resilience of Biashara Ward and Nakuru County at large."
Wakulima Market was established by the late President Daniel arap Moi, underscoring its national significance in Kenya’s urban and agricultural economy.
It has over 21 sections, each dedicated to different types of farm produce, making it one of the most organized produce markets in the region.
The market provides livelihoods for thousands of traders and supports the city’s food supply chain.
