Economic Profile

Since becoming the county headquarters, Ol Kalou has grown from a quiet outpost into a busy economic hub and a key part of the national government's Affordable Housing Programme. The town is seeing major upgrades, including new rural roads, urban improvements, modern markets, better water access, and more electricity connections.

As the center of Nyandarua County’s productivity, which is one of Kenya’s main food baskets, Ol Kalou leads in growing potatoes, maize, wheat, and horticultural crops. Dairy farming is still the backbone of the area, supported by groups like the Ol Kalou Dairy Co-operative Society, which uses automated milk pasteurisation and processing.

As the administrative capital, the town has attracted big commercial banks, micro-finance institutions, supermarkets, and agricultural trading networks that serve the wider region.

Major Development Focus Areas

Improving the potato and dairy value chains remains a top priority, with efforts like building cold storage facilities and creating direct market links. Developing infrastructure such as rural roads, clean water supply, and urban upgrades is still essential. Housing projects are underway to meet growing demand and support urban growth. Empowering youth through agribusiness is also a key focus.

Political Behaviour

Ol Kalou voters focus on issues like agriculture, infrastructure, and economic opportunities. The area is known for strong personal loyalties and long-running rivalries, especially between Hon. David Kiaraho’s supporters and his frequent challenger Sammy Kamau Ngotho.

National politics can influence results, but local performance on farming, roads, water, and market access often shapes voter choices. The upcoming July 16 by-election is seen as an important test of party strength in the Mount Kenya region before the 2027 General Election.
