• Breast cancer is still the most common cancer among women. In line with the World Health Organization (WHO), over 2.3 million women were diagnosed in 2024 alone. While the survival rates improve in high-income countries, many women in low and middle-income regions still receive late diagnosis, limited treatment options, and social stigma.

October is here, and with it, a wave of pink ribbons, powerful stories, and a renewed dedication to saving lives. Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2025 has a personal theme: “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters.” It is a reminder that behind every diagnosis is a woman, a family, a community and a story worth telling.

Breast cancer is still the most common cancer among women. In line with the World Health Organization (WHO), over 2.3 million women were diagnosed in 2024 alone. While the survival rates improve in high-income countries, many women in low and middle-income regions still receive late diagnosis, limited treatment options, and social stigma.

This year, WHO is pushing its 60:60:80 targets: 60% of breast cancers diagnosed at early stages, diagnosis within 60 days of symptom onset and 80% of patients completing recommended treatment

These goals aim to reduce global mortality and ensure that every woman, regardless of geography or income has a fighting chance.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we can assist by getting screened or encouraging others to do so for early detection of cancer through screening, educational outreach, support of survivors and those in treatment and ensuring equity to all women by giving them accessible care.

It also has to do with stories, both told and untold. The mom who caught her cancer early. Through chemotherapy, the reporter continued to report. The daughter, who now promotes screenings in her community.

Citizens are encouraged to participate by wearing pink throughout October, scheduling screenings or encouraging loved ones to do so, sharing survivor stories on social media using hashtags like #ThinkPink and #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth2025, supporting local events, walks, and fundraisers and donating to organizations funding research and care.

During this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are reminded that every story is unique, every journey matters and together, by raising awareness, showing compassion and taking action, we can rewrite the narrative.
