Political analyst Dr. Michael Ndonye raises alarm over the growing factionalism within President William Ruto’s administration, especially among leaders from the Mt. Kenya East region. At the heart of this issue is Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, the Chairperson of the ruling party United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

She is a prominent figure not just for her political position but also as one of the few women governors in Kenya.

Currently, the Mt. Kenya region is represented by only two female governors: Cecily Mbarire of Embu and Anne Waiguru of Kirinyaga.

In a recent appearance on the TalkChat Podcast, Dr. Ndonye asserted that Mbarire wields more political influence than Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and that if she exits UDA due to these factions, other female governors in the party are likely to follow suit.

“If one of them is not part of the government, others are going to be affected. If Mbarire is out, others will feel like they are out,” he explained.

He pointed out that Kindiki's recent accusations against Mbarire claiming she failed to mobilize her constituents against hecklers of the president reflect deeper issues within the party.

“Already, Kawira Mwangaza is out,” he noted, suggesting that the political landscape is shifting and that Mbarire's presence is vital for cohesion.

“Mbarire is not someone to be dismissed lightly,” Dr. Ndonye warned. “Ruto should not allow her to be undermined, especially by the Deputy President. She is a key player who should be allowed to navigate challenges from within.”

Dr. Ndonye has urged President Ruto to reevaluate the strengths and contributions of leaders from Mt. Kenya East.

Earlier in June, Mbarire herself expressed concerns about senior figures within UDA undermining her authority, a situation that could further exacerbate tensions.
