At Kabarak University, education is about more than just books and lectures. It’s about building a place where every student has a real chance to succeed—no matter their financial situation.
One of the university’s most important programs, the work study initiative, has quietly changed the lives of many students, making sure that money is never the reason someone’s dream has to end.
Financial problems are one of the biggest challenges students face on campuses all over Kenya. Many struggle with paying tuition and everyday costs, which can become so overwhelming that some drop out of school.
Sadly, for a few, this stress leads to deep sadness and even suicide. Money worries don’t just hurt students’ studies—they affect their mental health and hope for the future.
Kabarak University understood this urgent need and created the work study program to help students in tough financial situations. The program gives students the chance to work on campus in different departments while they study.

Instead of getting paid in cash, their earnings go directly toward their tuition fees at the end of each semester. This means students can focus on their classes without constantly worrying about money.
But the program is about more than just easing fees. It helps students gain real work experience, learn important skills, and feel more independent—things that will help them after graduation. Many might refer to it as the perfect way to “gain while getting paid.”
Dean of Students, Dorcas Githaiga, highlights how the program started after noticing many students falling behind on payments. "Here at Kabarak University, we realized there were some students who were struggling in payment of their fee because of their background and therefore the work study program was started on that basis," she notes.
According to the dean, as at around March 2025, the program supports about 40 students, helping them finish their studies and take their exams without the heavy weight of financial stress.
The program is part of Kabarak’s caring approach to supporting students. University Counselor Pastor Esther Kapsir says that besides financial help, students also receive personal guidance. "At Kabarak University, we have well trained counselors who are able to guide students through navigating financial challenges," she highlights.
Pastor Esther also notes that the counselors are always available to help with school challenges, emotional struggles, and even managing money wisely. The program also works with the Christian Union’s Mercy Basket, which provides meals to students who need them, so no one studies on an empty stomach.
When money troubles threaten to cut a student’s journey short, Kabarak’s work study program shines as a source of hope. It shows how kindness, smart planning, and real support can protect students’ dreams and well-being.
By combining financial help with skill-building and emotional care, Kabarak makes sure students not only graduate but also step into the future confident and ready.
